Moon Ottomans - Work in Progress

A couple of weeks ago I started to look for ottomans for my living room for all of the movie nights that we are still going to continue to have due to the current times and after looking at prices which were as low as the amazing price of 80 dollars a piece, I decided to look into potentially making my own. I didn’t want anything too fancy, just something to prop my legs and feet up, and I wanted two so that they could either be nested or stored on top of each other since my apartment doesn’t have too much space. I originally wanted the ottomans to be just cubes, but once I decided to make them, I realized I could make them any shape I wanted. My sofas are black and the majority of my furniture is black so I wanted something that would stand out, yet compliment everything else in the room. After thinking of different ideas, I decided to make the ottomans to nest together so that they formed a full moon. When taken apart, one would look like the waning crescent moon phase and the other would look like a waxing gibbous moon phase or like a smaller full moon.

I used a duck canvas fabric for the sides and the bottom and soft, minky fabric for the top.

Because my apartment is small, both of the ottomans nested together had to have a total diameter of 25 and a half to 26 inches.

After all the cutting was completed, I decided to paint the duck canvas fabric, so that the sides would look like the galaxy.

I traced the base onto Styrofoam, which I inserted for the bottom of the ottoman to help give the base a little more structure. I ended up using 4 of the 12 ounce bags of Polyfil in this ottoman. I filled the ottoman up, and hand sewed the top down.

Take a look at the process of making this first ottoman in the video below:

This is just part 1. Part 2 with the crescent moon ottoman will be up soon.
